TRP National ReUse Contest

By Ted Reiff

Calling all do-it-yourselfers, woodworkers and amateur architects! The second annual TRP National Reuse Contest is officially underway. If you have a pet project in the pipeline, now’s the time to draw up the plans, assemble the tools and start shopping for used materials. You have roughly six months to submit your entry to a participating store.

In addition to recognition, admiration and modest notoriety, winners (and their sponsoring reuse stores) will receive valuable prizes. Last year we had 12 participating stores and, between them, hundreds of entries. This year we expect even more.

We’re expanding the prizes, too. The top three national winners will receive gift cards or discount coupons redeemable for merchandise at their sponsoring store -- $1000, $500 or $250 for first, second and third place, respectively. Plus, a TRP representative will visit the first-prize winner to conduct an interview, photograph the winning project and treat the victor to dinner at a top local restaurant. The sponsoring store manager will be invited to join the celebration, and local media will be urged to cover the event.

To participate, just submit your entry to a participating reuse store by August 31, 2013. This will enter you in the store’s local contest. If you win first, second or third place at the local level, your entry will automatically be forwarded in the national contest, which will be judged by an independent three-person jury.

Participating stores will receive additional prizes based on the number of entries they receive. So forward this article to your local reuse store and encourage them to join in the fun. Interested stores should email ShannonBarnes@TheReUsePeople.org, or TedReiff@TheReUsePeople.org, or phone 510.383.1983 and ask for Shannon or Ted.

Additional information and updates will be posted on the TRP website:http://thereusepeople.org/reusecontest/main.
